Agriculture, flooding, food security and preparing for the future were all discussed at a conference last week at the Riverside Park Hotel.

Moderated by local Green Party candidate Brendan Cahill-Flynn, the evening’s theme was ‘Our Sustainable Future’ and featured a panel of speakers that included IFA Wexford President Jer O’Mahony, Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan, President ICA from Wexford, Breda. Cahill, Dr Karl Richards from Teagasc and Jonathon Hugges from Sustainable Enniscorthy.

“Discussions continued for over two hours and included successive rounds of questions from audience members, ranging from concerns about ash dieback and the increased paperwork burden for farmers to aviation, land saturation and the safety of our drinking water,” he Brendan said.

“What surprised me the most was that everyone expressed a similar set of goals and desired outcomes, and it seems that the problem up until this point has been the differences in our methods of achieving them.

“I think these kinds of conversations are where the rubber meets the road and are essential to bringing us together to address these challenges in a way that benefits everyone.”
